Weight loss that keeps the muscle.
One care team across two buildings: Dr. Chris and the clinic on the medical side, the coaches at Athlos Iron Lair on the training side. The goal is fat down and muscle kept or built, measured during and at the end of every 12-week block. It starts with a free Transformation Assessment.
Not all weight is the weight you want to lose.
The scale adds fat, muscle, water and bone into one number. A program that only watches that number can't tell which one is leaving. The research on the newer weight-loss medications shows why that matters.
- STEP 1
semaglutide 2.4 mg - In the trial's body-composition substudy, about 39% of the weight lost was lean mass rather than fat.
- SURMOUNT-1
tirzepatide - In the trial's body-composition substudy, about 25% of the weight lost was lean mass rather than fat.
- Lundgren et al., NEJM 2021
exercise plus liraglutide - After an initial diet, a year of exercise combined with liraglutide lowered body-fat percentage by 3.9 points, about twice as much as either one alone.
These are study results, not a prediction for any one person. In both medication trials, participants had diet and activity counseling but no structured strength program. That is why strength training and protein start in the first week here, and why fat and lean mass are measured separately rather than read off the scale.
Medicine first. Then the work.
Every client starts from a measured baseline and runs in renewable 12-week blocks. The medical side and the training side are planned together, as one program.
- Medical evaluation
with Dr. Chris - History, examination and screening before anything is prescribed or any training begins. Whether medication has a place in the plan is decided here, by the physician.
- Baseline labs
tailored to the person - Metabolic, thyroid, hormonal and cardiovascular markers, plus a general panel. Repeated at each block, or sooner when Dr. Chris orders it.
- Body-composition testing
throughout each block - Fat mass and lean mass measured separately at the start, during each block, and at the end of every 12-week block. The scale alone can't say which one is moving.
- Medication, when indicated
never on its own - When a physician finds it indicated, a GLP-1 medication such as semaglutide or tirzepatide, brand-name and FDA-approved by default. A compounded version is used only when there is a specific, lawful medical reason for an individual patient. Dose changes are physician-led, and any taper is planned rather than abrupt.
- Coached strength training
three sessions a week - At least three coached sessions a week at Athlos Iron Lair, from the first week, scaled to where each person starts. Everyone on medication trains.
- Nutrition coaching
protein first - A protein-first plan and a moderate calorie deficit, with regular check-ins from a nutrition coach working under physician oversight. Anything medical goes to the physician.
- Safety checks
reviewed by the physician - Blood pressure, labs and body composition are checked against set thresholds. A result that crosses one goes to Dr. Chris for review before the plan moves on.
Four starting points. One goal.
The program is for adults 30 and older with fat to lose and muscle to keep. The goal is the same for everyone; only the starting point and the pace change.
Metabolic health
People whose weight is tied up with blood sugar, blood pressure or sleep, and who want those markers to improve without giving up strength.
Body recomposition
People who want to be leaner and more muscular, not just lighter.
Healthy aging
Women around and after menopause, and older adults, who want to get stronger and steadier, maintain and improve bone density through resistance training, and lose fat where it's needed.
Already on a GLP-1
People prescribed one elsewhere who want training, protein and measurement around it. Dr. Chris decides case by case whether to take over the prescription or work alongside the current prescriber.
Not offered at launch: anyone under 30, anyone who can't yet stand or walk safely, and anyone who has had bariatric surgery. Eligibility for any medication is decided at the medical evaluation.
Four steps, then every twelve weeks.
The assessment and the evaluation build the baseline. Everything after that is adjusted against real numbers.
Free Transformation Assessment
About fifty minutes at Athlos Iron Lair with Walter: goals, a body-composition scan, a short movement screen and a walk round the floor. No cost, no obligation.
Medical Evaluation
With Dr. Chris at the clinic, from December 1: history, examination and baseline labs. This is where medication is decided on, or ruled out.
One Plan
The care team puts the training, the nutrition and any medication into a single plan, and walks you through it before the first session.
The 12-Week Block
Three coached sessions a week, nutrition coaching and physician oversight, ending in a full reassessment. Then a new block with new targets, or graduation to a maintenance option.
Body composition is checked during each block. At the end of every block, body composition, the physical assessment and labs are repeated, and the next block's targets come from the new numbers.
Two businesses. One plan.
Athlos Health is the medical clinic on Carson Street. Athlos Iron Lair is the training facility on Hawthorne Boulevard. In the program they work as one team, meeting every month on every client and raising anything urgent in between.
There is also a line they don't cross. With your signed authorization, coaches see what they need to coach: training data, body composition, and any exercise restrictions the physician sets. They never see lab values, diagnoses or medications. Those stay in the clinic's record.
See the floor first: the video tour or the equipment.
The medical decisions are Dr. Chris's call.
Dr. Chris Traughber is the program's physician and medical director. He makes every medication decision, sets the clinical protocols, and signs off whenever a safety check is tripped. Family Practice trained, he founded the urgent care in Palos Verdes and ran it for thirty-nine years, and has been medical director of a Torrance skilled nursing facility since 1990.

Straight answers.
What happens at the free assessment?
About fifty minutes at Athlos Iron Lair with Walter. You talk through your goals and training history, get a body-composition scan read back on the spot, do a short movement screen after a brief safety questionnaire, and walk the floor. Then you hear how the program and the founding cohort work, and what the next step would be. There is no cost and no obligation.
Do I have to take a weight-loss medication?
No. Medication is used only when Dr. Chris finds it indicated after the medical evaluation. Training, nutrition and measurement are the core of the program for everyone, with or without it, and medication never replaces the training.
Which medications do you use?
When a GLP-1 is indicated, brand-name, FDA-approved semaglutide or tirzepatide by default. A compounded version is used only when there is a specific, lawful medical reason for an individual patient. Which one, and at what dose, is Dr. Chris's decision after the evaluation, and the dose rises only as fast as it is tolerated.
I'm already on a GLP-1 from another provider. Can I join?
Yes. Dr. Chris reviews each case and decides whether to take over the prescription or work alongside your current prescriber. Either way, the training and the protein start straight away.
How much weight will I lose?
We don't predict individual results, and it's worth being wary of anyone who does. What the program aims for is fat loss rather than scale loss, muscle held or built along the way, and strength at or above where you started, all measured during and at the end of every 12-week block.
Do I need to be fit already?
No. Training starts where each person is. Anyone deconditioned starts on a foundations track, with a coach within reach for every standing and walking test, and moves up when ready.
What is the founding cohort?
The first group to go through the program. The free assessment doubles as the application, and the start date and terms are confirmed with each person before they join.
Where does it happen?
The assessment and all training are at Athlos Iron Lair, 22715 Hawthorne Blvd Unit B, Torrance. Medical visits are at Athlos Health, 3878 W. Carson Street, Suite 220, Torrance, from December 1, 2026.
Does the gym see my medical information?
No. With your signed authorization, coaches see what they need to coach: training data, body composition, and any exercise restrictions the physician sets. Lab values, diagnoses and medications stay in the clinic's record.
